Over-Eating is the belief, “I eat too much.” Over-eating is subjective. It is the bodily experience of having eaten too much. Over-eating is a symptom, not a problem. More often than not, there is a reason behind it. Maybe you can’t process your emotions, hence you overeat. Honour the symptom, it has a message, don’t beat yourself up.
The majority of people aren’t over-eaters, they are just operating from certain fears and a set of impossible standards.
Some common fears are-fear of appetite and fear of weight.
1. If you only overeat when you are alone and hiding it, but try to eat very little when you are around other people, you can try to ask yourself "Where else in my life am I hiding? What else about myself am I hiding from others? And how can I take small steps to be more authentic and show my real self around people?
People often overeat when they are along because food is a symbolic substitute for relationship. It's a friend that never rejects you.
The one relationship you can be yourself with. The friend that never judges you or expects a lot of things from you - but just gives and just is.
The whole question is about about intimacy, fear of life, noticing nuances, letting our feelings show up and revealing our softness and authenticity with oneself and other people. When we don't feel like we can be ourselves fully in our human relationships, at least the food can be the relationship we have where we are not judged, where we can truly be ourselves with all our imperfections, where we can just receive without being expected to give back all the time, and where we are always loved unconditionally.
Try to practice being more alone with your feelings - without distractions. Differentiate between the inner critic and inner wisdom (that quietly waits for you to engage and ask for advice.) Be okay with uncomfortable feelings. We all have them. Its not so much about figuring it all out as it is recognising those emotions are there. It's building the "awareness muscle” within, so you can experience something without acting on it right away.
