When faced with stress many people start eating to take the focus off the emotions of fear and anxiety. Eating certain food items during stress activates certain areas in the brain which are responsible for a sensation of pleasure. Since many people face stressors more frequently nowadays, they have an overdrive for snacking on pleasurable food frequently.
Stress is known to increase the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. High levels of cortisol increase cravings for sweet and salty food.
Sometimes people eat during stress just to keep their mouth busy and release some nervous energy.
The emotional eating triggered by stress provides only short term relief. The cause of the stress does not change, while sugared food can bring a crash in emotions after a momentary high. Let’s not mention the associated weight gain associated with a high calorie intake.
Here are some suggestions for healthy anti-stress snacks:
Fruits – banana (it can increase the levels of serotonin), orange (contains Vitamin C folic acid and minerals), pineapple or any other fruit.
- Almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts with some raisins
- Pumpkin and sunflower seeds
- Salads - Fruit salad, cucumber carrot salad, spinach salad
- Boiled eggs
- Dark chocolate
